Bawku conflict: Houses are burned and three people are killed in the most recent gunfight

Three people, including a schoolgirl, were killed in Bawku on November 29, 2024, bringing the death toll from ongoing violence in the region to 32. The gunfire erupted following an intensifying conflict that has plagued the area since late October.

The latest incident occurred around the Gingande-Zongo area, where several homes were set ablaze during the exchange.
The violence, which began around midnight and persisted into the afternoon, has left many others injured, with some in critical condition. Local authorities are struggling to manage the situation as rival groups clash, often escalating during curfew hours imposed to curb the unrest.

The resurgence of violence has been linked to the return of rival chief Alhaji Seidu Abagre from exile, which some sources claim has exacerbated tensions. Bawku’s history of ethnic and chieftaincy disputes has further destabilized the region, leading to ambushes targeting travelers and increasing fear among residents.

Despite efforts from security forces to restore order, the situation remains volatile and unpredictable as local authorities face mounting pressure to address the escalating conflict.
