STEM: Ghana’s Human Resource to Become a Major Export Earner – Gabby

Gabby Otchere-Darko, a leading member of Ghana’s New Patriotic Party (NPP), has projected that human resource development in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) will soon become one of the country’s biggest export earners. Speaking at a recent forum on education and innovation, he emphasized the government’s investment in STEM education as a game-changer for Ghana’s economic transformation.

According to Otchere-Darko, the global demand for skilled professionals in STEM fields is rising, creating a significant opportunity for Ghana to train and export its talent. He noted that the government’s initiatives, such as constructing STEM-focused schools and upgrading technical institutions, are designed to equip students with the skills needed to compete globally.

“Ghana is positioning itself to not just rely on traditional exports like gold and cocoa but to become a hub for exporting highly skilled labor in STEM fields,” he stated. He highlighted countries like India and the Philippines as examples of nations that have successfully leveraged their human resource potential for economic growth.

Otchere-Darko also called for private sector collaboration to support STEM education and innovation, urging businesses to invest in training and mentorship programs for young Ghanaians.

He concluded by expressing optimism that with continued focus on STEM, Ghana could reduce youth unemployment while earning foreign exchange through the expertise of its workforce, ultimately boosting the nation’s development.
